SSC Stenographer Posts & Salary

  • Stenographer Grade ‘C’: Pay Level-6 (Rs 35,400–1,12,400)
  • Stenographer Grade ‘D’: Pay Level-4 (Rs 25,500–81,100)

The Grade ‘C’ posts are generally of a higher responsibility and pay scale compared to Grade ‘D’ posts. These positions are available in various ministries and departments.

Detailed Eligibility Criteria

  1. Nationality
  • A candidate must be a citizen of India, or
  • A subject of Nepal, or
  • A subject of Bhutan, or
  • A Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Vietnam, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Surinam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  1. Educational Qualification
  • Minimum Qualification: Candidates must have passed the 10+2 (Higher Secondary) or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.
  • Essential Qualification Date: Candidates must possess the required educational qualification on or before the specified cut-off date mentioned in the official notification.
  1. Age Limit
  • For Stenographer Grade ‘C’: 18 to 27 years (Candidates born not before 02.08.1997 and not after 01.08.2006 for the 2023 cycle)
  • For Stenographer Grade ‘D’: 18 to 27 years (Candidates born not before 02.08.1997 and not after 01.08.2006 for the 2023 cycle)
  • Note: For the 2023 cycle, the SSC announced that candidates born between 02.08.1997 and 01.08.2006 will be eligible. The exact eligibility age range will be specified in the official notification for each respective year.
  • Permissible Age Relaxation (as per Government of India rules; subject to documentary proof):
    • SC/ST: 5 years
    • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years
    • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PWBD): 10 years (UR), 13 years (OBC), 15 years (SC/ST)
    • Ex-Servicemen (ESM): 3 years after deduction of military service from actual age.
    • Other relaxations for specific categories (e.g., candidates who had ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period 01.01.1980 to 31.12.1989) apply as per SSC norms detailed in the notification.

SSC Stenographer Syllabus Breakdown

The SSC Stenographer exam comprises a Computer-Based Examination (CBE) and a Skill Test.

Computer-Based Examination (CBE)

  • Duration: 2 hours (120 minutes) for all candidates.
  • Sections: 3 sections, 50 questions each, 200 questions total, 200 marks.
  • Negative Marking: 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.
  1. General Intelligence (Reasoning)
  • Topics: Analogies, Syllogism, Coding-Decoding, Series Completion (Number, Letter, Figural), Blood Relations, Direction Sense, Clocks and Calendars, Ranking and Ordering, Cubes and Dice, Mirror Images, Paper Folding, Venn Diagrams, Embedded Figures, Non-verbal reasoning, Puzzles.
  1. General Knowledge & General Awareness
  • Topics: History (India & World), Geography (India & World), Indian Polity and Constitution, Indian Economy, General Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Everyday Science, Current Events (National and International), important Schemes, Awards and Honours, Sports, Books and Authors, Static GK.
  1. English Comprehension
  • Topics: Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test, Para Jumbles, Spotting Errors, Phrase Replacement, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms and Antonyms, One-word Substitution, Idioms and Phrases, Sentence Improvement, Active and Passive Voice, Direct and Indirect Speech, Tenses, Articles, Prepositions, Conjunctions.

Skill Test (Shorthand Test)

  • This test is conducted after the CBE and is qualifying in nature.
  • Criteria:
    • Stenographer Grade ‘C’: Dictation of 10 minutes at a speed of 100 WPM (Words Per Minute) for English or 80 WPM for Hindi, followed by transcription within 40 minutes (English) or 55 minutes (Hindi).
    • Stenographer Grade ‘D’: Dictation of 10 minutes at a speed of 80 WPM for English or 60 WPM for Hindi, followed by transcription within 50 minutes (English) or 65 minutes (Hindi).
  • Candidates are expected to transcribe the dictated matter on a computer.

  • Stenographer Grade ‘C’:
    • Pay Level: 6
    • Basic Pay: Rs 35,400 – Rs 1,12,400
    • Grade Pay (pre-revision): Rs 4,200

  • Stenographer Grade ‘D’:

    • Basic Pay: Rs 25,500 – Rs 81,100
