Detailed Eligibility Criteria

  1. Nationality

  • A candidate must be a citizen of India, or
  • A subject of Nepal, or
  • A subject of Bhutan, or
  • A Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Vietnam, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Surinam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  1. Educational Qualification

  • Minimum Qualification: Candidates must have passed the Matriculation (10th Standard) or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.
  • Essential Qualification Date: Candidates must possess the required educational qualification on or before the specified cut-off date mentioned in the official notification.
  1. Age Limit

  • For MTS and Havaldar: The age limit is typically between 18 to 25 years (candidates born not before a specific date and not after another specific date, to be detailed in the notification).
  • For Havaldar in CBIC and CBN: The upper age limit is 27 years (candidates born not before a specific date and not after another specific date).
  • Note: The exact eligibility age range and cut-off dates will be specified in the official SSC MTS notification for each respective year. For example, for the 2023 cycle, candidates born between 02.08.1996 and 01.08.2005 were eligible.
  • Permissible Age Relaxation (as per Government of India rules; subject to documentary proof):
    • SC/ST: 5 years
    • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years
    • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PWBD): 10 years (UR), 13 years (OBC), 15 years (SC/ST)
    • Ex-Servicemen (ESM): 3 years after deduction of military service from actual age.
    • Other relaxations for specific categories (e.g., candidates who had ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period 01.01.1980 to 31.12.1989) apply as per SSC norms detailed in the notification.

SSC MTS Syllabus Breakdown

The SSC MTS selection process involves a Computer-Based Examination (CBE) and, for Havaldar posts, a Physical Efficiency Test (PET)/Physical Standard Test (PST). Paper-II of the CBE is qualifying.

Phase I: Computer-Based Examination (CBE)
This phase consists of two sessions.

Session-I:

  • Sections: Numerical and Mathematical Ability, Reasoning Ability & Problem Solving.
  • Duration: 45 minutes (approximately).
  • Negative Marking: 1 mark deducted for each incorrect answer in this session.
  • Marks Distribution: 20 questions per section, totaling 40 questions, 120 marks.
  1. Numerical and Mathematical Ability
  • Topics: Number System, HCF & LCM, Decimals and Fractions, Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Profit and Loss, Simple Interest and Compound Interest, Average, Mixture and Alligation, Time and Work, Pipes and Cisterns, Time, Speed and Distance, Mensuration (2D & 3D), Basic Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Data Interpretation (Tables, Graphs, Charts).
  1. Reasoning Ability & Problem Solving
  • Topics: Analogies, Syllogism, Coding-Decoding, Series Completion (Number, Letter, Figural), Blood Relations, Direction Sense, Clocks and Calendars, Ranking and Ordering, Cubes and Dice, Mirror Images, Paper Folding, Venn Diagrams, Embedded Figures, Non-verbal reasoning, Puzzles.

Session-II:

  • Sections: General Awareness, English Language & Comprehension.
  • Duration: 45 minutes (approximately).
  • Negative Marking: 3 marks deducted for each incorrect answer in this session.
  • Marks Distribution: 25 questions per section, totaling 50 questions, 150 marks.
  1. General Awareness

  • Topics: History (India & World), Geography (India & World), Indian Polity and Constitution, Indian Economy, General Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Everyday Science, Current Events (National and International), important Schemes, Awards and Honours, Sports, Books and Authors, Static GK.
  1. English Language & Comprehension
  • Topics: Comprehension Passage, Cloze Test, Para Jumbles, Spotting Errors, Phrase Replacement, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms and Antonyms, One-word Substitution, Idioms and Phrases, Sentence Improvement, Tenses, Articles, Prepositions, Conjunctions.

Phase II: Paper-II (Descriptive)

  • Nature: Qualifying in nature.
  • Format: Short Essay and Letter/Application in English or any language included in the 8th schedule of the Constitution.
  • Duration: 30 minutes.
  • Marks: 50 marks.
  • Purpose: To test basic writing skills and general awareness of the candidate.

Physical Efficiency Test (PET) / Physical Standard Test (PST) – For Havaldar Posts Only

  • PET (qualifying):
    • Cycling: 15 km in 15 minutes for Males; 1 km in 5 minutes for Females.
  • PST:
    • Height: Male: 157.5 cm; Female: 152 cm (relaxations for certain categories/regions).
    • Chest: Male: 76 cm (unexpanded), 81 cm (expanded). (No provision for females).
    • Weight: Proportionate to height and age for females.

Salary Structure and Career Growth

Salary Structure (7th Central Pay Commission)

  • MTS and Havaldar:
    • Pay Level: 1
    • Basic Pay: Rs 18,000 – Rs 56,900
    • Grade Pay (pre-revision): Rs 1,800
    • Approximate In-hand Salary: Rs 22,000 – Rs 30,000 (This is an estimation and depends on the city of posting, DA, HRA, and other allowances.)

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): A percentage of Basic Pay, revised periodically.
