Detailed Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the RRB JE examination, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Nationality

  • Candidates must be Indian citizens.
  • Alternatively, candidates can be subjects of Nepal or Bhutan.
  • Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India are also eligible.
  • Persons of Indian origin who have migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Zaire, or Zambia with the intention of permanently settling in India are eligible, provided they hold an eligibility certificate.

Educational Qualification

The educational qualifications vary slightly depending on the specific post:

  • For Junior Engineer (JE) posts: A Diploma in Engineering in the relevant discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Computer Science, IT) or a Degree in Engineering (B.E./B.Tech) in the relevant discipline from a recognized University or Institution.
  • For Depot Material Superintendent (DMS): Diploma or Degree in Engineering in any relevant engineering stream.
  • For Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA): Bachelor’s degree in Science with Physics and Chemistry as subjects, or a Diploma in Engineering.
  • For Junior Engineer (Information Technology Branch): PGDCA/B.Sc. (Computer Science)/ BCA/ B.Tech (IT)/ B.Tech (Computer Science)/ DOEACC B level course of 3 years duration.

Note: Final year students of Degree/Diploma are generally NOT eligible to apply for the RRB JE 2025 Recruitment Examination.

Age Limit

  • Minimum Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  • Maximum Age: The maximum age limit is generally 33 years. However, some sources indicate up to 36 years as per specific notifications or as of a specified cut-off date (e.g., 1st January 2025).
  • Age Relaxation: Age relaxation is provided for candidates belonging to reserved categories as per government rules:
    • SC/ST: 5 years
    • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years
    • Persons with Disabilities (PwBD): 10 years
    • Ex-Servicemen: Actual period of service in defence plus 3 years.
    • Additional relaxations may apply for specific categories or in case of shortages.

Medical Standards

Candidates must also meet the prescribed medical standards, which include specific vision requirements (e.g., A-3, B-1, B-2, C1) for different posts.

RRB JE Syllabus Breakdown

The RRB JE examination process involves two Computer-Based Tests (CBTs) followed by Document Verification and a Medical Examination.

First Stage Computer-Based Test (CBT-I)

CBT-I is a screening test, and its marks are not considered for the final merit list. It consists of 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) to be answered in 90 minutes.

  • Mathematics: Number System, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Mensuration, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar & Clock, Pipes & Cisterns.
  • General Intelligence and Reasoning: Analogies, Series, Coding-Decoding, Mathematical Operations, Relationships, Syllogism, Jumbling, Venn Diagram, Data Interpretation and Sufficiency, Conclusions and Decision-Making, Similarities and Differences, Analytical Reasoning, Classification, Directions, Statement – Arguments and Assumptions.
  • General Awareness: Knowledge of Current Affairs (National & International), History of India (including Freedom Struggle), Geography of India, Indian Polity and Constitution, Indian Economy, Sports, Science and Technology, Famous Personalities, Arts and Culture, Awards and Honors.
  • General Science: Physics, Chemistry, Life Science (Biology) up to the 10th standard level.

Second Stage Computer-Based Test (CBT-II)

CBT-II is crucial as its marks are considered for the final merit list. It consists of 150 MCQs to be answered in 120 minutes.

  • General Awareness: Similar to CBT-I, covering Current Affairs, Indian Geography, Indian History, Indian Polity, Indian Economy, Science and Technology, Sports, etc.
  • Physics & Chemistry: Questions will be based on the 12th standard syllabus.
  • Basics of Computers and Applications: Fundamentals of Computer, Hardware, Software, Networking, Operating Systems, MS Office, Internet, etc.
  • Basics of Environment and Pollution Control: Introduction to Environment, Types of Pollution (Air, Water, Soil, Noise) and their control, Waste Management, Global Warming, Acid Rain, Ozone Layer depletion.
  • Technical Abilities: This section is discipline-specific and covers topics relevant to the engineering branch applied for. For example:
    • Mechanical Engineering: Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Theory of Machines, Thermodynamics, Manufacturing Technology, Material Science, Machine Design.
    • Electrical Engineering: Network Theorems, Electrical Machines, Power Systems, Electrical and Electronics Measurements, Digital Electronics.
    • Electronics Engineering: Analog and Digital Communication, Microprocessors, Control Systems, Electronic Devices and Circuits.
    • Civil Engineering: Building Construction, Surveying, Soil Mechanics, Structural Analysis, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering.

Negative Marking: In both CBTs, there is a negative marking of 1/3rd mark for each incorrect answer.

Salary Structure and Career Growth
