Nationality

  • Candidates must be citizens of India.
  • Subjects of Nepal or Bhutan are also eligible.
  • Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  • Persons of Indian origin who have migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India, provided they hold an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

Educational Qualification

The educational requirements vary slightly depending on the specific Grade B stream:

  • For Officers in Grade ‘B’ (DR) – (General):
    • A Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with a minimum of 60% marks (50% for SC/ST/PwBD applicants) or an equivalent technical or professional qualification in aggregate of all semesters/years.
    • Alternatively, a Post-Graduation in any discipline or equivalent technical qualification with a minimum of 55% marks (pass marks for SC/ST/PwBD applicants) in aggregate of all semesters/years.
    • Graduation must be of at least 3 years’ duration after Class XII.
  • For Officers in Grade ‘B’ (DR) – DEPR (Department of Economic and Policy Research):
    • A Master’s Degree in Economics/Econometrics/Quantitative Economics/Mathematical Economics/Integrated Economics Course/Finance, with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters/years from a recognized Indian or Foreign University/Institute.
    • OR PGDM/MBA Finance with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters/years from a recognized Indian or Foreign University/Institute.
  • For Officers in Grade ‘B’ (DR) – DSIM (Department of Statistics and Information Management):
    • A Master’s Degree in Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Mathematical Economics/Econometrics/Statistics & Informatics from IIT-Kharagpur/Applied Statistics & Informatics from IIT-Bombay with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters/years.
    • OR Master’s Degree in Mathematics with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters/years and one year postgraduate diploma in Statistics or related subjects from an Institute of repute.
    • OR M. Stat. Degree of Indian Statistical Institute with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate of all semesters/years.

Age Limit

The age limit for RBI Grade B 2025 is typically calculated as of September 1, 2025.

  • General Category: Candidates must be between 21 and 30 years old. This means they must have been born not earlier than September 2, 1995, and not later than September 1, 2004.
  • Age Relaxation: Upper age limits are relaxed for reserved categories as per government rules:
    • SC/ST: 5 years.
    • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years.
    • Persons with Disabilities (PwBD): 10 years.
    • M.Phil. holders: Up to 32 years.
    • Ph.D. holders: Up to 34 years.
    • Ex-servicemen: Specific relaxations apply.
    • Candidates with prior experience: Central Government employees with 3 years of continuous service are eligible for age relaxation.

RBI Grade B Syllabus Breakdown

Phase 1 (Preliminary) Examination

This is an objective-type Computer-Based Test (CBT) and acts as a screening process. It consists of 200 questions for 200 marks, to be completed in 120 minutes with sectional timings. There is a negative marking of 1/4th mark for each incorrect answer.

Phase 2 (Main) Examination

    • Objective + Descriptive.
    • Growth and Development: Measurement of growth (National Income and per capita income), Poverty Alleviation and Employment Generation in India, Sustainable Development, Environmental issues.
    • Indian Economy: Economic History of India, Changes in Industrial and Labour Policy, Monetary and Fiscal Policy since reforms of 1991, Priorities and Recommendations of Economic Survey and Union Budget.
    • Globalization: Opening up of the Indian Economy, Balance of Payments, Export-Import Policy, International Economic Institutions (IMF, World Bank, WTO, ADB).
    • Social Structure in India: Multiculturalism, Demographic Trends, Urbanisation and Migration, Gender Issues, Social Justice.
  • Paper-II: English (Writing Skills) – (General Post)
    • Descriptive.
    • Essay Writing.
    • Precis Writing.
    • Reading Comprehension.
  • Paper-III: Finance and Management (F&M) – (General Post)
    • Objective + Descriptive.
    • Finance: Financial System (structure and developments, financial institutions, primary and secondary markets), Monetary Policy, Fiscal Policy, Inflation, Financial Inclusion, Risk Management.

Interview

Candidates who clear Phase 2 are called for an Interview, which carries 75 marks. The interview assesses a candidate’s personality, communication skills, leadership qualities, general awareness, and suitability for the role of an officer in the RBI. Candidates can choose to give the interview in either Hindi or English.

Salary Structure and Career Growth

  • Basic Pay: As per the latest updates for 2025, the starting basic pay for an RBI Grade B Officer is ₹78,450 per month.
  • Pay Scale: The revised pay scale is ₹78450-4050(9)-114900-EB-4050(2)-123000-4650(4)-141600 (for 16 years).
  • Gross Emoluments: The initial gross monthly emoluments (excluding HRA) are approximately ₹1,50,374. This includes Dearness Allowance (DA), Grade Allowance, House Rent Allowance (HRA), Local Compensatory Allowance, Special Allowance, and Learning Allowance.
